The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia adheres to the IDEM (IDEntity Management for Federated Access) service managed by GARR, the first Italian Federation of Authentication and Authorisation infrastructures (AAI), whose purpose is to allow users from the national scientific and academic community to more easily access networked services and content made available by different organisations.
Membership of IDEM offers end users the advantage of using a single password to access all the resources available through the Federation while simplifying access procedures that become completely independent of where the user is located.
By becoming a member of the Federation, the organisation also has the opportunity to reduce the costs of user management and the implementation of new services and the possibility of exercising greater control over authentication and authorisation processes.
Within the IDEM Federation, GARR acts as coordinator by providing the central infrastructure and services and by signing the membership contracts.

The services accessible through Federated Authentication are made available by members and/or partners of the IDEM Federation.
The system, against each request for access to the services, will issue the following information to the entity or supplier managing the specific service:
- user's first and last name
- e-mail address
- anonymous, persistent, non-assignable user identification (a string automatically generated by the system that does not contain user information)
- information on the user's affiliation with the organisation they belong to (consisting of a macro-profile of the user, e.g. Student, Member, Staff, Affiliate, Alumn...)
